Family Matters #
There is a tradition in my family that has been passed down since two generations, from my grand-father through my dad to me. My grandfather was a craftsman and not rich, but he never denied a book to my father, never! If it was something with pages that had letters on it and my father wanted it, he got it.
As a child I had many books and read a lot. The picture was different when I grew up and as a teenager I was lazy as hell and nearly dropped out of school. Thanks to my parents who kicked my ass multiple times the last minute for me to wake up. It took time for me to appreciate the education I got and the possibilities that come with it.
Never Stop Learning #
Continuous education is key for a working software professional. Simply put: It keeps you in the market. But it is fun to learn new things from time to time, even if there is no immediate use for it. It widens your horizon, provides you with problem solving solutions that might not always be apparent at first.
In his book The Clean Coder software professional Robert C. Martin puts it this way:
Professional programmers suffer from a lack of diversity in the kinds of problems that they solve. Employers enforce a single language, platform, and domain in which their programmers must work. Without a broadening influence, this can lead to a unhealthy narrowing of your resume and your mindset. It is common for programmers to find themselves unprepared for the changes that periodically sweep the industry.
That paragraph spiked the idea for this blog. Since I am constantly learning and want to learn more that I constantly hear but have no clear picture about, I will let you take part in my learning experience by writing this blog. I can help you with your learning experience by doing.
Stay In The Market #
Learning about that you have no immediate need of reminded me of the squirrel. To prepare itself for the hard times in winter it starts in late summer to collect food to have everything at hand when times are rough.
Am going to learn about topics I might need in my future career as a software professional. Nevertheless, there is no guarantee that I will need what I have learned. Thus I can never be sure if my investment in time and energy will pay out.
But one thing is certain: It will keep me, my mind, flexible to adapt to the inevitable changes that regularly come in the field of software engineering.
