The Book of Sensu

·3 mins

A decision has been made: I am going to write a book!

For some time now I was playing with that idea. Apart from writing a diary for nearly 10 years and writing a blog for one year, I thought it was about time to write a book.

Writing a book? About what? #

It took some time to find a topic, but finally I have made the decision: The Sensu Monitoring Framework.

But why a book?

Since I am using Sensu at work a lot, I was searching for some more info on it other than the Sensu project WiKi on GitHub or stuff I found via Google. I wanted a concise book, but could not find one.

Learning by Teaching #

There is an additional reason why I want to write about Sensu. Since I have just started using it I am far from being an expert on it.

In order to teach something, you need to be proficient with the topic. By writing the book I will gain more and more expert knowledge and hopefully will also be able to contribute to the Sensu project, let it be documentation or code.

Bird by Bird #

Writing a book seems like a huge task. Daunting!

Anyways, I like a challenge and I like experimenting on ideas. Writing this book will be a proof to myself that writing a book is not a daunting venture at all.

I am going to tackle it “Bird by Bird”, piece by piece, little by little. Actually, I have already started writing the book without realizing it by writing the blog post “Provisioning Sensu with Puppet”.

Everything that will be in the book some day will be published first on my blog here.

Agile Writing #

I just love the idea of self-publishing your work. I also love writing software in an agile way. Leanpub is your perfect partner to bring both together.

Here are a few reasons why I have chosen their service:

  • I love the idea of self-publishing.
  • I love the idea to release small chunks of your product to get early feedback.
  • They create your book in all major formats, such as mobi for Kindle, epub for iPad and other ebook readers.
  • All the rights, everything, belongs to you.
  • Additionally to Leanpub, you can publish it anywhere else you want and even sell a print version of your Leanpub compiled book.
  • Their service is for free, they only charge for a sale.
  • Their pricing strategy is very transparent.
  • They don’t take much for royalty fees.
  • You can set the price or leave it up to your readers.
  • It is easy and quick to set up.
  • You can write the whole book in Markdown, no need for complicated and slow text processors.

So, here it is, the official web presence of “The Book of Sensu”.

For now, you can do the following there:

  • Leave your email-address or subscribe to the RSS feed to be notified about all book updates.
  • Tell me how much you would like to spend for this book.
  • Leave a comment and tell me what you think.

Please, go there and check it out. I would be more than happy and grateful if you consider to be a reader of my book someday.

Let me know what you think about me writing that book in the comments below or on the official page of the book.

Thanks a lot!
